Palermo Italy

The city of Palermo, Italy is a beautiful one of unique buildings and architectural history.

Most of the 16th and 17th century monuments in Palermo are located in the old city centre from Via Vittorio Emanuele to Via Maqueda.

Interestingly, most of the buildings from the Norman Era, including the Palazzo dei Normanni and the cathedral, were built on top of earlier Arab palaces and mosques.

At the Quattro Canti is the Renaissance Palermo and the Baroque Palermo.

Just 8 km from the city centre is the spectacular Santa Maria di Monreale cathedral, a jewel of Norman architecture with magnificent mosaics.

Sicily is also famous for all its food specialities especially sweets, however, many do not know that ice cream comes from Sicily and the ice cream made from citrus fruits that you find in Sicilian pastry shops is exceptional.

Getting to Palermo

You may come to the beautiful city of Palermo either by air or by sea.

You can fly into Punta Raisi airport (airport code PMO) from all Italian airports as well as from London, Paris, Bruxelles and others), then you can either take the train to Palermo Central Station or the bus to Piazza Politeama.

And you may arrive in Palermo by sea from Genoa, Naples, Livorno, and Cagliari.

Getting Around Palermo

While staying in Palermo, you can travel around the city by the orange bus system, by taxi, by renting at car at a local car rental agency, riding a scooter, or on foot. With traffic jams fairly common, walking seems to be the preferred method for people exploring the city.
